What is Estradiol cypionate?
Estradiol cypionate (EC) is an estrogen drug used to treat menopausal symptoms and hormonal therapy for low estrogen levels in cis women, hormonal therapy for transgender women, and hormonal contraception for cis women.
Estradiol cypionate was first described in 1952 and introduced for medical use. Along with estradiol valerate, it is one of the most commonly used estradiol esters. Estradiol cypionate is mainly used in the United States, but it is also sold in some other countries. The drug is not available in Europe. It is currently not available as a generic drug in the United States.
Medical use
The medical use of estradiol cypionate is the same as that of estradiol and other estrogens. Examples of drug indications include hormone therapy and hormonal contraception. Regarding the latter, estradiol cypionate has been used in combination with medroxyprogesterone acetate as a combined injectable contraceptive. Together with estradiol valerate, estradiol undecanoate, and estradiol benzoate, estradiol cypionate is used as a high-dose estrogen therapy in the feminization hormone treatment of transsexual women. The drug has been used to induce puberty in girls who have delayed puberty due to hypogonadism.
Side effects
Common side effects of Estradiol cypionate include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, bloating, breast tenderness or swelling, headache, weight change, acne or skin color change, decreased libido, impotence, difficulty orgasm, migraine, dizziness, ankle or foot swelling, depression, menstrual cycle changes or breakthrough bleeding.
