It belongs to a group of steroid hormones called progestins and is the main progesterone in the body. Progesterone has many important functions in the body. It is also an important metabolic intermediate for the production of other endogenous steroids (including sex hormones and corticosteroids) and plays an important role in brain function as a neurosteroid.
