What is 5-Aminolevulinic acid phosphate (ALA)?
δ-Aminolevulinic acid (also known as Dala, δ-ALA, 5ALA, or 5-aminolevulinic acid) is an endogenous non-protein amino acid and is the first compound in the porphyrin synthesis pathway, which leads to Mammal heme, and chlorophyll in plants.
5ALA is used for photodynamic detection and surgery of cancer.
Medical use
Cancer diagnosis
Photodynamic detection uses light-sensitive drugs and a light source of the correct wavelength to detect cancer using the fluorescence of the drug. 5ALA or its derivatives can be used to observe bladder cancer through fluorescence imaging.
Cancer treatment
Aminolevulinic acid is being studied for photodynamic therapy (PDT) for many cancers. It is not currently the first-line treatment for Barrett’s esophagus. Its application in brain cancer is currently in the experimental stage. It has been studied in many gynecological cancers.
Side effects
Side effects may include liver damage and nerve problems. Hyperthermia may also occur. It also caused death.
