What is Tianeptine acid?
Tianeptine is a drug mainly used to treat major depression and has been studied for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Structurally, it is classified as a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA), but it has different pharmacological properties from typical tricyclic antidepressants. Tianeptine was discovered and patented by the French Institute of Medical Research in the 1960s.
Medical use
Depression and anxiety
Tianeptine has been shown to be effective against major depressive episodes (major depression), comparable to amitriptyline, imipramine and fluoxetine, but with significantly fewer side effects. In a group of people with both depression and anxiety, it proved to be more effective than maprotiline. Tianeptine also shows significant anti-anxiety properties and can be used to treat a series of anxiety disorders including panic disorder. This is proved by a study in which 35% is used in the treatment of paroxetine or tianeptine. Carbon dioxide gas (carbon) shows an equivalent panic blocking effect. Like many antidepressants (including bupropion, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, moclobemide, and many other drugs), it may also be effective Cognitive dysfunction caused by depression has a beneficial effect on the cognition of patients. A 2005 study in Egypt showed that Tianeptine is effective for men suffering from depression and erectile dysfunction.
Tianeptine has been found to be effective for patients with depression, Parkinson’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder. In these respects, it is as safe and effective as fluoxetine and moclobemide.
Side effects
Compared with other tricyclic antidepressants, its cardiovascular, anticholinergic (such as dry mouth or constipation), sedation and appetite stimulation effects are significantly reduced. A recent review found that it is one of the antidepressants most likely to cause liver toxicity (liver damage), although the quality of evidence supporting this concern is limited. Unlike other tricyclic antidepressants, Tianeptine does not affect heart function. Mu-opioid receptor agonists sometimes cause euphoria, just like Tianeptine, occasionally at high doses, well above the normal therapeutic range. After long-term use in high doses, Tianeptine can also cause severe withdrawal symptoms, which should arouse extreme caution.
