Tianeptine is an atypical antidepressant. It is mainly used to treat major depression, but it can also be used to treat anxiety, asthma, and irritable bowel syndrome.
Benefits
Tianeptine is an antidepressant with new neurochemical characteristics. It increases the uptake of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) in the brain (as opposed to most antidepressants) and reduces the atrophy of neuronal dendrites caused by stress.
Side effects
The most common adverse reactions are nausea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and changes in dreams. Compared with tricyclic drugs, the incidence of anticholinergic effects of Tianeptine is lower. Liver toxicity is rare.
