Medical use
N-acetyl-L-cysteine ethyl ester (1 mM) prevents the formation of methemoglobin induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide in isolated human red blood cells. When administered at a dose of 50 mg/kg twice a day for two weeks, it increases glutathione levels in the liver, kidneys, heart, testes, and brain of rats.
